Sometimes the light keeps shining on me. Other times, like these dark days under Trump, I can barely see. Enter "Love in the time of Trump," a fascinating and optimistic memoir from Mike Millard, about growing up in the Pacific Northwest -- about logging, psychedelics, Vietnam, the Summer of Love, the Grateful Dead and his career as an editor and writer. The book is about the things that brought us together. But also the things that tore us apart and ultimately brought us Trump. The writing is strong and the ideas thoughtful. Light for dark times! It is rare to encounter a personal memoir of the Sixties which includes the protagonist’s service in the Vietnam war as well as what life was like as a hippie in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury district. The book is a potpourri of personal impressions, many poetic, some disturbing -- Millard’s description of his hospital stay among wounded Nam vets was particularly moving. His Haight observations pretty much describe it the way it was -- warts and all.The title: Love in the Time of Trump is an up-front word-play on Nobel laureate García Márquez’ acclaimed novel Love in the time of Cholera -- clearly equating that disease with America’s most egregious president. Millard makes his case by comparing our “Trump dysfunction disorder” with what he learned from the overwhelming unity and love he experienced on psychedelics back in the day. In other words, as the 1965 hit single put it: “What the world needs now is love, sweet love.” That’s a gross oversimplification of the book’s title, but in essence what the author offers as a solution to our existential quandary. As a personal ideal, it can hardly be disagreed with, but given our collective malaise Love is unlikely to prevail until six decades of accumulated shit hits the global fan: Karma can be a bitch, but with love or without it, she inexorably shapes the future. Synchronistically, this book came out only a few short months before the “Time of Love, Cholera and Trump” suddenly morphed into our current “Time of the Corona Virus Pandemic.” (If there ain’t enough love around to save our sorry asses the blessed Zeitgeist will do it for us!)Millard speculates about whether there is a Transcendent Intelligence controlling our fate -- you can get endless arguments on either side of that abstraction, but Earth’s “hard core” fossil record tells us that mass extinction events are an Intelligent Nature’s way of clearing the slate for new projects. We are now experiencing this planet’s 6th such event: love may not save us quite yet, but (as the highest peak of the psychedelic experience guarantees) some version of Love will prevail on the other side of Armageddon -- with some evolved version of our current selves there to consolidate it.
